The Tina Project

I'm greatful to have a wonderful connection with an amazing friend.  My friend introduced me to this cause this past Thursday.  We attended the Kick- Off National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month fundraiser.  This is the first time I learned of the Tina project.  I want to som share this information, I feel it is so important and incredibly needed.  After Chris Brown abused Rhianna, 52% of people thought it was Rhianna's fault.  This is a heartbreaking, outrageous statistic.  How did we become a society in which we think that it is ok for violent acts to happen and when did we start blaming the victim?

The teen years are incredibly important.  Teens are so vulnerable when it comes to relationships.  So much can be prevented simply through educating.  Teaching teen girls and boys what is right and what is wrong in a relationship helps in many ways.

It is my hope that the below education gets implemented as soon as possible. Learning of this organization gives me hope and it helps me Believe, Love, Understand, and Empower.

The Tina Project

From The Tina Project's website:

AboutThe Tina Project is named in honor of Tina Croucher who at age 18 was murdered by her boyfriend on December 21, 1992. Seventeen years later on December 28, 2009 Governor Ted Strickland signed into law Ohio House Bill 19, also named The Tina Croucher Act. The Tina Project was created in response to this mandate. The bill requires public schools to incorporate dating violence into their already existing policies prohibiting harassment, intimidation, or bullying. School districts also must include dating violence prevention education in the health curriculum. The bill mandates specified staff members to be trained about violence in dating relationships by October 2011 and every 5 years after the initial in-service training takes place. Schools will be mandated to provide instruction which shall include recognizing dating violence warning signs and characteristics of healthy relationships. School Boards are also directed to incorporate training in the prevention of dating violence into the in-service training required by current law for “nurses, teachers, counselors, school psychologists, or administrators”.
