Fighting the Fever

Many of you ,like myself, are reaching (if not there already) the point of being done with winter and ready for spring.

Cabin Fever, as stated via Wikipedia is defined as:
An idiomatic term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated and/or shut in, in a small space, with nothing to do, for an extended period (as in a simple country vacation cottage during a long rain or snow). Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, irrational frustration with everyday objects, forgetfulness, laughter, excessive sleeping, distrust of anyone they are with, and an urge to go outside even in the rain, snow or dark.

This is the time of year when Cabin Fever starts spreading rapidly.  There is no immunization for it (besides frequent vacations to warm places during this time) and it's extremely contagious.  When other stressors are present in our lives, the ability to cope with this fever becomes even more difficult.

For me, this is a horrible time of year. Everything becomes so difficult.  Dealing with cranky customers, sticking with goals, staying positive, and well getting out of bed is sometimes challenging.  Every year around this same time I vow to plan a vacation or a race or something somewhere warm to help make coping with this fever a little more possible....next year.

Around this time of year I become anxious and impatient to shed the winter season and start with the fresh spring season.  Spring is a time for renewal, it's a time for cleaning, organizing and airing out.  It's a time we can freshen up and revitalize. Spring means more life and more beauty; it means more warmth and more smiles.

When spring starts I love to go through my house and get rid of things I don't need or don't use and donate them. It feels so good to get rid of some of the material things that are taking up space.  It feels good to donate too! This spring I'll be going through my closets and getting rid of clothes that are too big for me (yay! I Love saying Peace Out to what I'll call "my extra baggage that I picked up during a bad time in my life because I thought life would get so bad I'd have to literally hibernate" weight.) It's also a time that I clean out the garage and declutter.  Spring is a time where I start to plan and prepare my garden.  Running outside will become more frequent and this alone will make me feel better in many different ways.  Spring is a time when we can shed these layers and feel alive again.  Layers of pounds, dust, clutter, all things that are weighing us down and holding us back from enjoying our lives and preventing us from being happy and free.

As I sit here after a frustrating day of work on a very dreary, rainy cold day, I'm holding on to spring fever and forgetting about cabin fever.  I'll do a few extra things that make me happy and occupy my mind with things that make me smile.  I'll look forward to change and the goodness that's on the way.  A word of advice to assist in keeping you going when this fever has you down...do something nice for someone else.  Do it as often as you can.  This is contagious as well and I promise it will help you smile!

March is just about here and it came in like a lion so here's a cheer to March going out like a lamb.
To all my feverish friends- stay warm and true to yourself.  Hang in there, spring will be here soon enough.!!!!

XOXO

  1. Great reminder to do something nice for someone else. It truly is more rewarding than doing something for the self. If everyone did one selfless act a week, think of how much better the world would be. Me and you can start it!
